WHAT IS DOW THEORY ??
The Dow Theory is a major concern stone of technical analysis. It is one of the oldest and best known method used to determined the major trend of stock prices. It was derived from writing of Charles H. Dow from 1900 to 1902 published in daily newspaper he founded, The Wall Street's Journal. Dow's theory was further refined by analysts writer S.A. Nelson, William P. Hamilton and Robert Rhea in the first few decades of few century.
SIX BASIC PRINCIPLE OF DOW'S THEORY :
1. Everything is Discounted by the price Averages, specially, the Dow Jones industrial averages and the Dow Jones transportation averages. Since averages reflect all information, experience, knowledge, opinion and activities of all market investors, everything could be possibly affect the demand for or supply of stock is discounted by the averages.
2. There are three trends in the stock prices,
A. The primary Tide is the major long term trend. But no trend moves in a trend line for long.
B. Secondary reaction are are the intermediate-terms corrections that interrupts and moves in an opposite directions against the primary tide.
C. Ripples (MINOR) are very minor day-to-day fluctuations that are of concern only to short-term trader and not at all to Dow Theorists.
3. Primary Tides/ Majors trends have three phases

C. Ripples (MINOR) are very minor day-to-day fluctuations that are of concern only to short-term trader and not at all to Dow Theorists.
3. Primary Tides/ Majors trends have three phases
A. Accumulations Phase -- This phase is a result of far-sighted investors accumulating stocks at a time when business is slow but anticipated to improve.
B. Public distribution Phase -- It's a result of investors buying stocks in reactions to improved fundamental business condition and increasing corporate earnings.
C. Distribution phase -- The final up move occurs when the general public finally notice that all the financial news is good. During the final move up , speculation runs rampant.
4. The averages must confirm each others : To signal a primary tide bull market major trends, both averages must rise above their respected highs of previous upward secondary reactions. To signals major trend bear market , both Dow Jones industrial averages and the Dow Jones Transportation averages must drop their respective lows of previous secondary reactions. A trend to a new high or low by just one average alone is not meaningful. Also, it is not uncommon for one average to signal a change in trend before the other. The Dow Jones theory doesn't stipulate any time limit on trend confirmation by both averages.
5. Volume must confirm the trend : Volume increases or diminishes according to weather the price is moving in direction of a trend or in reverse. Dow considered volume is secondary indicator. His buy or sell signals were based on closing prices.
6. Only end-of-day, closing prices on the averages are considered. Price movement during the day are ignored.
